Disclaimers

W.I.P.

This List is a Work in Progress. Dead by Daylight is ever-evolving and in 2021, there is a lot that is considered a Tech. You can help us compile all techs together in this guide by posting the, even if only the vague names of, Techs we missed in the comments, below. Thank you!
And yes, we will be working on slowly, but surely adding Videos showcasing these Techs.

What classifies as a “Tech”?

The term “Tech” in DBD has become very fluid over time. In essence, it stands short for Technique and includes everything that adds unconventional tactics to your playstyle with various effects. This includes intentional (and perhaps unintentional) gameplay features that you bend to your own will.

Legend

=> The Difficulty Level (rated on 0 – 5 Stars) is determined by a combination of the amount of set-up the tech requires and the amount of practice it takes to reliably pull it off.

=> The Effectiveness Level (also rated on 0 – 5 Stars) is determined by a combination of how often it can reliably work (Red-Ranks), the power of the effect, if pulled off correctly and, how much you need to sacrifice to pull it off. (Non-related example: Mettle of Man essentially requires you to throw the game to pull it off. Imagine the same with Techs. If you lose the game because you went for a Tech, it is not effective.)

=> Origins of Techs are highly debated. If we put someone as the Inventor of a Tech, a significant amount of players agreed that they came up with it or they made the Tech popular.

=> All Techs marked as Working were tested on Version 4.7.2 unless marked otherwise.

360 [★★☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Alias: The Spin
Origin: Tom, alias 72hrs, former DBD Content Creator (many claim this, but it is debatable)
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆ ¹

The 360 is simple in its execution.
When anticipating the Killer to swing, you move your character in one direction and moving your mouse / right stick in another, until you complete a full circle around the Killer. You can also chain a 360 into another, and another, making it a 720 and so on.

There are some variations of the 360 (There are no official names for them):

  • Beamer-Spin: A popular technique used by Streamers and other content creators includes the usage of a Flashlight. You click on the Ground to then initiate a Spin. Whilst this does telegraph/give the Killer an idea of what you are doing, it helps to perform a cleaner 360.

  • Fake: It is also possible to fake a 360. Starting a Spin and stopping at already 45° or 90° to then continue, making the Killer swing into another direction, causing them to lose momentum and distance.

  • DH-Chain: A more effective technique is to start a 360 and at a given point (usually after half a circle), chain it into a Dead Hard. This can allow you to make it to a nearby Pallet or throw the killer off and make them Whiff. It can also prove absolutely useless if the Killer just waits it out.

¹: This will rarely work on experienced / decent+ killers. Most people just wait them out completely, making even most variations useless.

Bunny Tech [★☆☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: Bunny, DBD Veteran (most likely quit by now)
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★☆☆☆☆

The Bunny Tech is a classic.
It is very simple, you might just call it “Tactical Disconnect”.
Before the Killer can hit you to injure/down you, you disconnect to deny them various points.
If you get hit, you have failed the bunny tech.
If you successfully bunny tech the killer, honour states they must immediately disconnect and/or uninstall, for they are shamed. (To be honest, they won’t though. 🙁 )

The Bunny Tech is often used to send a message.
It is, however, nothing but another way of throwing the game for you and your team.
Can still be fun, tho’. Depending on the Killer’s reaction.

CJ Tech [★★★☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: www.twitch.tv – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkdPXyOgSPznrllbQhlTljw

¹ Requires a significant amount of set-up and since this Tech is widely known, most red-rank killers don’t fall for it anymore… or shouldn’t, anyway.

Corner Tech [★☆☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★☆☆☆☆ ¹

The Corner Tech is very simple.
When going around a Wall and breaking LOS with the Killer, crouch at the Edge, where the Killer can’t see you unless they check. If they move past you, get behind the Killer and move to where you came from. Don’t try this without Iron Will.
The Lack of Scratch Marks (and Blood, if injured) will make the Killer suspicious quickly or they may just outright see you instantly. But depending on distance, they might assume you walked and vault a Window or something of the sort.

¹ If this works on a Killer, even as a Blendette, it is a sign that the Killer you go against is likely inexperienced. But, I’ve seen it work in Reds more often than it should, so… Your call.

Car Tech [⚠️] [★★★☆☆]

Status: Unconfirmed ⚠️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆

The Car Tech applies to The Blight, The Hillbilly and Demopuppy.
This might not work with Cars on the Maps revamped by the The Realm Beyond Project.
This Article needs further research, try at your own risk.

This Tech revolves around the Front & Back collision of the Cars which can be slightly Buggy on Maps s.a. Autohaven, Badham, etc. It may allow for mentioned Killer to use their Power on these sides and slide-off them without “colliding” with the car and hitting a Survivor on the Side.

Demo Tech [★★☆☆☆]

Status: Works on Demo 🐕
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆

And the 72nd Tech in the “Why is this considered a Tech?” category.

When you are Demo and you are on a Hill or other high platform that doesn’t have invisible Walls (Ormond, new Coldwinds have these e.g.), and you shred down there, you do not lose velocity until you hit the ground. Therefore, it is possible to snipe someone from relatively far away.
The chances are rather low, but when it works it is damn satisfying.
(Note: Shredding on a Survivor does not injure them, Shredding/Landing on a Pallet does not break it.)

Dumb Tech [★★★☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: https://twitter.com/AyrunTV (unsure about this one)
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆

The clue’s in the name.
You stun the Killer and vault directly into them. Most killers will just know exactly what to do and this will just get you hit. This will never, under no circumstance work if the Killer has Enduring. Pull it off on an Enduring-Killer and enjoy the hit or grab.
But there are a few possible variations here as well:

  • Lithe: I feel this is the most effective. If you perform a Dumb Tech with Lithe, you can immediately do another round around the Loop and even if the Killer immediately swings after the Stun, they won’t hit you. If they wait it out, you will still have enough distance to get to the Pallet again on most loops.

  • Inside: After the Stun, the Killer has no collision, so you can vault into them and crouch in them, which can cause confusion on their part. From there on out, you can vault back or run. But either way, it will most likely result in a hit, unless they turn around or are maximum levels of Lost.

  • Double: Vault into the Killer and immediately back. Works sometimes.

  • Blind-Chain: You can flashlight-blind the Killer before performing a Dumbtech. You can also slow vault into the Killer after, which won’t allow them to break the Pallet ‘nor see you for a while. Vault back immediately after. If the Killer blind-swings, you might get hit. This one also works more often than it should.

Endurance Tech [★★★★☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ ¹
Effectiveness: ★★★★☆ ²

The Endurance Tech can be used when healing a Teammate with a Medkit that has a Styptic Agent applied to it. It can be used on downed or injured Teammates. For it is quite uncommon, most Killers do not expect it ².

It is recommended to be used when you are injured yourself, healing someone and the Killer is coming to interrupt you. (If the Survivor is downed), when you get the Survivor up, inject them with your Styptic Agent and have them take a Hit. The Killer is likely to go for them, unless the Survivor books it and sells you to the killer while doing so. You can also just save the Styptic and use it on yourself and take a hit, but the Killer is more likely to notice this.

¹ You need a lot of pieces to be in the right place and it is dependent on a Teammate. This may be unlikely to work in Solo Q, unless your pick-up is skilled and/or perceptive.
² If the Killer is perceptive, the effectiveness of this is highly reduced. But if not, they may falsely assume that the Survivor you pick up has Soul Guard.

Fire Barrel Tech [★☆☆☆☆]

Status: Nerfed ⤵️, Still Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ☆☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆ (pre-patch) || ★☆☆☆☆ (now)

The Fire Barrel Tech aims to juke the Killer by using a… Fire Barrel.
Before The Realm Beyond, the particles of the Barrel were very intense and hiding behide the fire would make your largely invisible depending on conditions. It looked like this:

Dead by Daylight - Techs (+) - Comprehensive List [4.7.2.]

But, all things must come to an end:
Dead by Daylight - Techs (+) - Comprehensive List [4.7.2.]

Hiding behind it isn’t viable anymore, but… apparently, it still works against some pepegas, so we aren’t putting it in the RIP Section.
#JusticeForBarrelBoy

Invincible Tech [★★★★★]

Status: Works ✔️
Invincible Tech is not the official name. There may be other Aliases for this.
Origin: www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/swehyt (Unknown if inventor but popular user.)
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★★★

This Tech needs 2 Survivors, both needing to be equipped with Flashlights.
In the vicinity of the Killer, both enter a Locker that are directly next to each other.
If the Killer opens a Locker, the other will exit the Locker and use the time of the animation to flashlight-save the other Survivor.
Since the Stun-time is long, both Survivors have enough time to re-enter both Lockers.
That is where we come to the name of the Tech, “Invincible Tech”, for they can not be picked up until a Flashlight Battery runs out or a Killer Power (e.g. Pyramid Heads Cages). But in the case of the latter, a perk such as Head-On can provide an escape window.
If the Killer commits to this, they are arguably throwing the game, due to the strength of this Technique.

Item Tech [🖕]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ☆☆☆☆☆ – ★★☆☆☆ (varies)

The Item Tech is an interaction in which a Survivor can steal another Survivor’s item.
When being healed, you cancel the action and immediately drop your item.
If your healer does not pay attention, they will unintentionally pick up your item, allowing you to steal the item they have just held.

Disclaimer: This will probably end up getting you sandbagged. If that happens, you deserved it! 😀

JRM Tech [☆☆☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/thejrm_
Difficulty: ☆☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ☆☆☆☆☆

Seamless Execution:
Run into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wall, barrel, tree, etc.

Dead by Daylight - Techs (+) - Comprehensive List [4.7.2.]

Kek Tech [⚠️] [★★★★☆]

Status: Unconfirmed ⚠️(Should work, but untested)
Origin: ??? (Likely, Ayrun)
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★★☆

The Kek Tech is what I like to call the Window’s Tech bigger cousin, because it works in a very similar way but is more reliable.

When the Killer vaults a Window, they lose collision for a very small window of time.
In that time, since you can go through the killer, you can run at them and fast vault the window they just vaulted. You essentially end up swapping positions!
The Tech proves quite effective, but may take a while to get used to!

Example,www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/Ayrun

Locker Tech [★★☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆

Simplest thing in the world.
When you anticipate a Swing, jump in a Locker to avoid it.
Before the Killer grabs you out of the Locker, jump out and chain it into a 360, Dead Hard or anything.
Low chance of success, to be honest, but it wastes some time.

Locker Save / CJ [★★★☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆

This Locker Save requires a bit of Set-up.

  • A Survivor must be downed in front of a Locker.
  • You must have a Flashlight or Firecracker.

This is very similar to a CJ-Tech but using a Locker instead of a Pallet.
When taking the Killer to the Locker with the downed Survivor in front, once the Killer swings, hop in the Locker.
Right when the Killer is about to open the Locker, jump out. This will take their prompt to open the Locker and will pick up the Survivor.
Free-est save afterwards, yada-yada.
It doesn’t work often, but when it does… Well, Killer’s not gonna’ be happy!

Narnia Tech [☆☆☆☆☆]

Status: Nerfed ⤵️, Still Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★★★ (pre-patch) || ☆☆☆☆☆ (now)

The Narnia Tech revolves around the only true way to escape.

You jump in a Locker in sight of the Killer and when the Killer is about to open the Locker, but shortly before doing so you immediately disconnect. This will allow you to leave the Trial and travel to Narnia. But they… just went in the Locker!?

Dead by Daylight - Techs (+) - Comprehensive List [4.7.2.]

Sadly, ever since a while ago, you just lie dead in front of the locker.

Perfectly Executed New Inside Strategy [★★☆☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Alias: Collision Tech, Hitbox Tech, Tag Tech, Penis Tech
Origin: www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/thejrm_ (Made it popular, anyways.)
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆

When the Killer hits you, you and the killer lose their collision. That means you can get inside the killer and crouch in them. Because the angle at which they can look down they won’t see you and might be slightly confused. This Tech is one of the “It can go either way” category.
Iron Will is recommended.

Shift Tech [★★★★☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Alias: Blocker Tech, Bloodlust Reset, Bloodlust Tech
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Effectiveness: ★★★★☆

The Shift Tech is about breaking chase with a Killer.
This has two main uses:

  • To prevent the entity blocker, allowing you more than 3 vaults on the same window.
  • To break Bloodlust (+0.2 m/s for every 15 seconds of chase, capping at +0.6 m/s), allowing to preserve resources and maintain higher chase efficiency.

A chase can only be initiated and maintained if all of the following is true:

  • The Survivor has to be sprinting
  • There must be a direct line-of-sight on the Survivor.
  • Killers need to be within 12 meters of the chased Survivor.

The Shift Tech is revolving around breaking one or multiple, usually both the first and second, for multiple seconds to stop the chase.
Doing this can prove difficult and will greatly depend on the Tile. With patient play, T&L’s and Long-wall Jungle Gyms work with it and can greatly assist in lengthening your chases.

Tree Tech [★★★☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆

Another “this works more often than it should”.

It is simple, we’ll keep it short:
In order to avoid chase, you hide behind a Tree (whilst out of line-of-sight) and move with the Killer, keeping the Tree between each other to avoid being seen.

This also works in chase if the Tree is not far away from your Loop (so scratches don’t make give it away too hard.) and you have a long enough time-window to get there, so the killer doesn’t get Line-Of-Sight on you. Shack is a good example, as Trees frequently spawn around it.

When having successfully juked the Killer, you should leave.
This will maximize the distance you receive from the Juke.

Example,www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/ZubatLEL

Window Techs [★★☆☆☆]

The (New), Old Window Tech

Status: Harder, but still possible ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆ ¹

The Window Tech abuses the fact that a Killer loses their Hitbox for a very small period of time after vaulting.
You do this tech by vaulting, having the Killer vault after you, telegraphing to go in one direction, then going through the killer when their Hitbox disappears, to then move to the other direction.
The timing takes practise and this will likely work against inexperienced- and rarely against experienced killers.

The (New), New Window Tech

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: ???
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★☆☆☆ ¹

The New Window Tech is essentially the same procedure as the old Window Tech, has the same benefits and same downsides, but it includes a Map or Addon-bound Key (e.g. Blood Amber).
I can’t tell you why it works, but when using your Map / Key, you can go through the vaulting Killer with barely no timing required.

¹ If the Killer just moonwalks, they will immediately see you and slap you. Advanced Killers are likely to do this.

zubTech [★★★☆☆]

Status: Works ✔️
Origin: www.twitch.tv – https://www.twitch.tv/zubatlel
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆

Another of the “It really shouldn’t work, but it still does.” category.

When seeing the Killer you assert domninace by moonwalking towards them.
When you anticipate the swing, you

  • Dead Hard away from them
  • 360 them.

Honestly, if the Killer doesn’t see anything coming and you make them Whiff… Eh, for some reason, it works more often than not.

R.I.P // PATCHED TECHS

Fatigue Tech (Half-Patch)

Status: ⚠️ Patched, but varaint available as an Exploit ⚠️
Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Effectiveness: ★★★★☆ ¹

⚠️ Piece of Advice: Do NOT Use This, Ever, For It Is An Exploit Now! ⚠️
This needs more research.
The old Fatigue Tech is gone, supposedly.

However, the Nurse & Blight, with frame perfect execution can still do a “trick”, but this is less of a Tech, more an abused exploit. Doing this will also most likely get you banned if used & reported in public matches, so… for completions sake, I suppose. (I am sure you will limit it to KYF and Local Tournaments…)

The Nurse & Blight go into Fatigue after using their Power. In the case of them chosing not to swing and then to go into Fatigue, if they swing in the same frame as they go into fatigue, they will still attack, although the animation already shows them going into their fatigue status. This should not be possible, but we’ve still seen it happen in 4.7.0.

Deflect Tech

Status: 🛑 Patched in 4.6 / 4.7 🛑
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆
Effectiveness: ★★★☆☆ ¹

The unoffically designated “Deflect Tech” is less a Tech and more an exploit.
People called it a Tech, so… Here we are.

Back in 4.5.0, it was discovered that by channeling a Key, if a Deathslinger would shoot you, you would “deflect” the projectile resulting in you not being hit. This might’ve been possible with Maps (and potentially other Killers), but there is no documentation of it. No matter, this exploit is thankfully a thing of the past.
