Hey there, welcome to this post, In this guide, we will tell you everything about Darkest Dungeon® II – Party Compositions + Tier List + and Character Analysis Follow this guide step by step.

This guide explains each character’s damage output potential and synergy. It digs into the overall strategies of the game, shows a tier-list, and offers numerous party compositions.

Intro

Most characters have DPS numbers, which are more accurately referred to as DPA – damage per action – however DPS is a more standard term. That should be sufficient to illustrate what is excellent and what is not.

For reference, one action equals 14 DPS; anything at or over that value is suitable for use.

Starting Party

Long story short – your very first squad sucks. It may consist of iconic characters but has zero synergies with its starting skills. Sure, with enough game knowledge and some luck you can beat the first Act with it, but enough game knowledge and the first squad hardly mesh together.

What can you do?

  • Dismas should occupy the fourth spot, his primary skill being Duelist’s Advance which is one of his elemental skills and most damaging ability.
  • Furthermore, 33% Combo generation occurs via his ripostes.
  • Combo shortage is the main culprit behind why this party doesn’t synergize as effectively – both MaA and GR need loads of them and this party lacks ways to apply it!
  • Plague Doctor should start in position three. She’ll move in after your first advance, and I would strongly consider giving her her own shrine right from the start as Plague Grenades are game-changers.
  • In the meantime, spam is Noxious and Battlefield Medicine – Blinding Gas doesn’t even work well as combo sources!
  • Grave Robber occupies the second slot. Since she does no damage without using combo, try doing something unexpected – opening each combat with Absinthe as opposed to healing.
  • While healing may still provide healing effects, Absinthe will make Grave Robber more tanky than usual and allow her to absorb much earlier damage than would normally occur.
  • Her most effective offensive ability is Poison Dart which should provide great advantage during combat.
  • MaA takes up position 1 and provides Crush/Bolster engines, Defender support if required and Defender capabilities when required.
  • Don’t forget that every character also possesses an additional skill: If they pass an attack while having less than 10% HP remaining (or approaching it), their hidden sixth ability activates and they gain 2 stress and 20% life regeneration respectively – stress can be cleansed away but deathblow cannot.
  • Your first five mastery points should go towards Duelist’s Advance, Poison Dart, Noxious Blast, Bolstering and Crushing.

Tier List and Progression

Tier A: Plague Doctor, Jester, Man-at-Arms.

Tier B: Runaway, Highwayman, Grave Robber.

Tier C: Occultist, Hellion.

Tier D: Leper, Vestal.

Flagellant – can’t say yet.

Bounty Hunter is more of a luxury, he’s unlocked later.

Good starting unlock sequence is:

Plague Doctor: up to Surgeon.

Jester: up to Virtuoso. 1 Shrine for the Harvest and he’s good.

Runaway: up to Arsonist.

Highwayman: up to Rogue.

Plague Doctor: up to Alchemist.

Grave Robber: up to Venomdrop.

Man-at-Arms: up to Vanguard (he’s low-ish priority because Vanguard is his only good path and it’s expensive)

Hellion: up to Ravager.

Occultist: up to Aspirant.

Leper: up to Tempest.

Vestal: it’s ok to unlock; her paths are dubious.

Paths should be unlocked ASAP – each path is 25% character efficiency, at the very least, so 4-path team is like having a fifth party member.

Another way to make early runs easier is by unlocking Trinkets. You want to do this in batches of 2-3-4 – unlocked trinket is given for a current run so you can get something imba from the get go. Shaping your squad around the received imba trinket is undoubtedly doable. Don’t be greedy – don’t unlock too many of them simultaneously so this honeymoon period lasts longer.

Pets are powerful but, early on, I’d suggest unlocking Wolf Cub only and using just that.

Combat items-wise, you want to unlock until you get your first Healing Item—honest HP healing, not status or something. If you don’t get it within the first 5 attempts, it’s a reason to consider restarting your account. After that unlock, put a pause to unlocking your combat items for a long while – this way you’ll get flooded with heals (and it’ll feel awesome).

Once you have these basics, go full Wealth, then full Journey. After these, you can finish at your discretion.

Early memories should be given only if a character has some imba-quirk – then memorizing him and locking that quirk is a good move. Memories themselves are not really worth the early expenditure.

The decent early-ish party builds

Your shrines will wary so I’ll list key skills only:

4 – Alchemist Plague Doctor: Noxious Blast, Plague Grenade, Battlefield Medicine.

3 – Virtuoso Jester: Inspiring Tune, Slice Off, Harvest.

2 – Deadeye Grave Robber: Absinthe, Poison Dart, Dead of Night, Pick ot the Face.

1 – Rogue Highwayman: Point Blank Shot, Duelist’s Advance.

PD drowns everything in blight and heals, Jester slices and de-stresses, GR Absinthe’s and then attacks, Highwayman uses PBS and Duelist to slide back and forth.

Once you have Vanguard MaA, you can swap GR for him – he’ll Crush and Bolster. Both builds are fine, it’s just a matter of preferrence.

4 – Arsonist Runaway: Firefly, Smokescreen, Cauterize.

3 – Surgeon Plague Doctor: Incision, Battlefield Medicine.

2 – Vanguard Man-at-Arms: Crush, Bolster.

1 – Rogue Highwayman: Point Blank Shot, Duelist’s Advance.

Runaway needs 2 shrines to enable Cauterize but it’s very much worth it. She does great damage with Firefly. Basic Smokescreen is meh, but Smokescreen upgraded is simply insane – it gives anything. Including Combo tokens for MaA to chomp on. MaA tanks and heals Stress. PD shanks and heals. Highwayman is once again sliding.

Once you get to almost full shrine progression with Runaway and PD (mb 10 hours into the game if you prioritize them), you can play this farming squad:

4 – Alchemist PD: Noxious Blast, Battlefield Medicine, Indiscriminate Science, Plague Grenade, Magnesium Rain.

3 – Virtuoso Jester: Inspiring Tune, Slice Off, Harvest, Encore.

2 – Arsonist Runaway: Firestarter, Searing Strike, Smokescreen, Cauterize, Hearthlight.

1 – Vanguard Man-at-Arms: Crush, Bolster.

The idea is that you Firestarter the Plague Doctor and apply 6 Burning Damage to the entire enemy party with each Magnesium Rain. And you Encore PD with Jester so cooldown ticks faster and so PD is able Magnesium Rain turn 1, Magnesium rain turn 2. This melts the enemies real fast, meaning you farm fast, meaning you get your candles fast. You’ll need to prioritize these three with the Shrines but that’s ok – MaA, GR and Highwayman can wait.

Once you have Venomdrop:

4 – Venomdrop Grave Robber: Flashing Daggers, Poison Dart, Dead of Night.

3 – Surgeon Plague Doctor: Incision, Battlefield Medicine.

2 – Arsonist Runaway: Firestarter, Searing Strike, Smokescreen, Cauterize, Hearthlight.

1 – Vanguard Man-at-Arms: Crush, Bolster.

Unlike 2-GR, 4-Venomdrop doesn’t start with Absinthe – she just spams Daggers.

Unlike the first game, making a single-DoT centric party is not that good of a plan – most DoTs depend on unique trinkets to boost them to full potential, so the more similar-DoT’ted characters you have, the less powers they have. Also, if your team is fully blight-ing, this means you’ll have to go double Foetor – because blight-boosting trinkets are only found in the area which is most resistant to blight. Same goes for burn and bleed. And spending two bouts in the area which totally resists your DoT is not a good beginner experience.

If you really love Boudica, she mostly plays with Jester – she can heal some Stress with Raucous (once you unlock that) but not enough to be main Stress Healer, unlike MaA.

4 – Alchemist Plague Doctor: Noxious Blast, Battlefield Medicine, Indiscriminate Science, Plague Grenade.

3 – Virtuoso Jester: Inspiring Tune, Slice Off, Harvest.

2 – Arsonist Runaway: Searing Strike, Smokescreen, Cauterize.

1 – Ravager Hellion: Wicked Hack, Iron Swan, Adrenaline Rush.

Hellion is also greatly boosted by Raucous Revelry and Howling End, her final unlocks. So if you’re a fan you’ll need to prioritize her as a shrine visitor.

You can also play this squad with Rogue Highwayman with PBS/Duelist rotation – Hellion wants plenty of combo and both Runaway and He-man provide that.
