If we ignore Yhorm it is possible to complete Dark Souls 3 using only Consumables (or Projectiles)

The one rule of the run is don’t deal damage with anything but Consumables. The details are up to you.

I used no shields, spells, miracles but used my fists to parry certain bosses. I also used the RTSR-buff from the Morion Blade but did not use the Grass Crest Shield or blessed weapons.

I killed some optional bosses but focused on an any% run without the DLC.

I mainly used Firebombs and later switched to Throwing Knives as they did way more dps. In hindsight I should have switched to knives sooner.

Consumables

Name Price Sold By No. Held Scaling Comment
Firebomb 50 Greirat 20 Strength (A), Dexterity (C) The main Consumable in the early game. Later still usefull for area of effect damage. Must be purchased from the Handmaid until you rescued Greirat.
Rope Firebomb 50 Greirat 10 Strength (A), Dexterity (C) Harder to control than a regular Firebomb but nice to have a stack when you run out of Firebombs.
Throwing Knife 20 Greirat 40 Strength (B), Dexteriy (A) The main Consumable in the mid- to lategame, since the damage is pretty close to Firebombs but the animation is way shorter.
Kukri 50 Shrine Handmaid 30 Strength (A), Dexteriy (S) Nice for the bleeding damage but unfortunately the animation is not as fast as the Throwing Knife so I rarely used them.
Black Firebomb 300 Patches 10 Strength (A), Dexteriy (C) Quite expensive so I only used them when necessary. The damage is pretty good compared to the normal Firebombs.
Rope Black Firebomb 300 Patches 10 Strength (A), Dexteriy (C) Another niche item I seldom used.
Lightning Urn 700 Shrine Handmaid 20 Faith (S) Extremely expensive and only worth it if you are going for a lot of Faith, otherwise they deal less damage than regular Firebombs.
Poison Throwing Knife 100 Yuria of Londor 40 Strength (D), Dexterity (B) I wanted to use them more but since most of the bosses are resistant or immune to poison there aren’t many opportunities.
Dung Pie 50 Shrine Handmaid 10 See Poison Throwing Knife, but even worse.
Stalk Dung Pie 50 Shrine Handmaid 10 See Dung Pie, but even worse.
Alluring Skull 800 Patches 10 Useful for the Deacons of the Deep.
Duel Charm 500 Shrine Handmaid 5 Useful against Soul of Cinder.
Undead Hunter Charm 500 Shrine Handmaid 5 Useful to farm the Symbol of Avarice.

Avoiding the item stack size limit

One problem you will encounter is that you cannot carry enough Consumables to deal enough damage to kill a boss.

However, you can drop items outside of a fog gate and grab the items through the fog gate from within the boss area.

Run to the fog gate, drop a stack of items (e.g. Firebombs) by going into Inventory -> select Firebombs -> Leave -> 20 -> YES.

Then run back and rest at the bonfire to refill your stacks. Repeat until you dropped as much items as you need in front of the fog gate (for Soul of Cinder I dropped five stacks).

You may not use a Homeward Bone or die (I think as soon as there is a loading screen the dropped items disappear). This also means that if you drop a lot of items and then die in the first phase of the boss fight all items will be lost.

Be careful to pick up the right stack from within the boss arena, as you won’t just pick up as much as you are missing, but instead pick up everything and send the stuff directly to your storage box.

Stats

I went for 27 Vigor, 40 Strength, 40 Dexterity and put the rest into Vitality. Stamina is only a problem when spamming Throwing Knives so I did not put any points into Endurance.

If you plan on using Lightning Urns then I propose putting the last points into Faith instead of Vitality.

Farming Souls

The problem in the early game is that if you fail you may run out of Consumables. To farm souls without spending more souls on Consumables to kill enemies I used environmental damage.

At first I used the Lothric Wyvern at the high wall, later the Giant at the Graveyard after the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire. I barely killed any enemies besides bosses to save Consumables.

I recommend doing the tree jump and equip the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring from the very beginning. As soon as you loot the Paladin’s Ashes you can buy Undead Hunter Charms and throw them at the mimic at the High Wall until it gives you the Symbol of Avarice. After killing the Abyss Watchers you can head down to the Smouldering Lake and loot the Shield of Want.

Rings

The Hawk Ring is pretty good, but I got it late because I wanted the giant to stay alive so I can farm souls, but I think I should have killed him earlier (by collecting all Young White Branches).

The Chloranthy Ring might be useful on Twin Princes but other than that I never had a problem with stamina.

In the table below you can see which rings increase the damage of which Consumables.

Flynn’s Ring Lloyd’s Sword Ring Pontiff’s Right Eye Clutch Rings Portrait Rings Red Tearstone Ring
(Black) Firebomb, (Black) Rope Firebomb, Lightning Urn No No No Yes Yes Yes
Throwing Knife, Kukri, Poison Throwing Knife Yes No No No Yes Yes
Dung Pie, Stalk Dung Pie No No No No No No

Miscellaneous

  • The run took me about 14 hours in total.
  • All Consumables (e.g. Throwing Knife vs Lightning Urn) cost the same amount of stamina when thrown (except for the ones you throw behind you, which are free).
  • Yuria questline was unnecessary, but I wanted an infinite amount of all Consumables.
  • Be careful when you send Greirat on his first mission. When you run out of Firebombs you need to buy them for twice the amount from the maid since Greirat won’t be available.
  • I never used Green Blossom or any Bug Pellets, although they are obviously Consumables.

Bosses

Ludex Gundyr

  • You need the Black Firebombs burial gift and collect the 5 firebombs near the cliff. Only throw a bomb at him after parrying an attack for increased damage.
  • I think you can hit him once or twice without the counterdamage, but if you run out of bombs just delete the character and start over.

    Vordt of the Boreal Valley

  • Pretty straightforward fight, you don’t even need to drop items in front of the fog gate. Rope Firebombs can be used effectively in phase 1 or while he casts his breath in phase 2.

    Curse-Rotted Greatwood

  • Drop a stack of Firebombs at the fog gate. Kill the hand and the foot first, then throw a few bombs at the belly but don’t kill it. Kite the boss to the entrance and finish the belly. Quickly pick up the new stack of Firebombs while he destroys the ground so you can start phase 2 with a full stack, since you won’t be able to get up there to pick them up later.
  • In phase 2 I killed everything but the back (somehow I could not reliable hit it or it was just too tanky) and then finished the boss off by attacking the belly/hand.
  • The right elbow can be easily killed with Rope Firebombs.

    Crystal Sage

  • Get some Poison Knives and poison him shortly before he starts phase 2 so that all of the poison damage ticks in phase 2.
  • Clones can and should be easily killed with a single throwing knife.

    Deacons of the Deep

  • Get some Alluring Skulls, kill 4 of the Deacons but not the last. Kite the Deacons to back of the room, then kill the last one and run back to the entrance where the archdeacon spawns. Throw Alluring Skulls to get free hits and just spam Firebombs, this will also kill the two blue healers. Just keep on nuking the archdeacon before the casters finish their curse, no interrupt necessary.
  • You can also wear the Antiquated Set for increased curse-resistance.

    Abyss Watchers

  • If you want to save Consumables just run away in phase 1 and let the red-eyed guy kill the boss. This will take a while and is really boring and not needed so I would not recommend that.
  • In phase 2 keep your distance and wait for attacks with a long downtime or long combos and just throw a single Firebomb.
  • Throwing Knives can be mixed inbetween

    Old Demon King

  • I first tried to kill him just before Wolnir but he took like no damage from Firebombs so I said ♥♥♥♥ it and left. I then came back before killing Soul of Cinder and easily killed him with Throwing Knives, don’t know how hard he is early game with Throwing Knives.

    High Lord Wolnir

  • You cannot drop items for later use since there is no fog gate so take a full stack of everything you can have.
  • When he spawns adds just kite/dodge them until he kills them for you so you can focus on the bracelets again.
  • I was surprised that I killed him on my first try but it was a very close encounter (spend everything but 12 Throwing Knives)

    Pontiff Sulyvahn

  • Stay on maxrange and hit him with Firebombs, you will waste a few bombs because he sometimes sidesteps but it’s not too bad.
  • It took me 18 Poison Throwing Knives to apply poison, which then dealt about 1000 damage, it’s not great but not bad either.
  • The clone dies quickly to Firebombs which gives you the chance to easily attack the boss while he resummons the clone which in return gets damaged as soon as he spawns due to the Firebomb AoE damage.

    Aldrich, Devourer of Gods

  • Pretty easy fight, just keep your distance so he does not submerge and dodge the range attacks while throwing Firebombs (he is weak to fire damage)
  • Also easy to hit with Rope Firebombs.
  • I think you can headshot him for extra damage but it’s unreliable and unnecessary, but will happen randomly from time to time.

    Yhorm the Giant

  • I don’t think it’s possible to kill Yhorm using only Consumables, since he is also immune to fire, poison and bleed. So I decided that the next best thing is to let Siegward help me. Just make sure he does not die, you can kill Ludleth of Courland early to get the Skull Ring and tank Yhorm while Siegward kills him.

    Dancer of the Boreal Valley

  • An easy fight because the fight is easy as a ranged player in general. Firebombs did more damage than expected.

    Dragonslayer Armour

  • Easy fight but takes a lot of time/Consumables, especially because the shield will block some of the stuff that you throw at him.
  • Phase 1 might be a good opportunity to use RTSR but I did not want to take the risk.

    Oceiros, the Consumed King

  • I used RTSR and Morion Blade in phase 1 since you can kite him easily.
  • Kukris deal insane bleeding damage.
  • On the first try I counted how many hits I need for phase 2 and on the last try I stopped soon before the intermission, healed up and switched gear to play phase 2 “normal mode”
  • Alternatively you can keep RTSR in phase 2, but since you can even spam/waste healing before running out of estus I see no reason to do so.
  • You can even stagger him for bonus damage by spamming Throwing Knives after his combo.

    Champion Gundyr

  • Probably the easiest fight of the run since you can just parry everything. I think you can run any strategy you want and still kill him.

    Twin Princes

  • Probably the hardest fight of the run. I did not want to spend 80 Throwing Knives in phase 1 so I tried to RTSR + parry Lorian but eventually failed a parry and died.
  • So then I just dropped a lots of Throwing Knives. In phase 2 Kukris deal very good damage to Lothric, but the animation of Firebombs and Kukris is too long to hit Lothric without getting hit by Lorian so I also only used Throwing Knives on Lothric (by hitting Lorian in the back).
  • Some of the Throwing Knives will miss and hit Lorian instead, which is not a problem because you can just use the Kukris while Lothric revives his brother. In the end I wasted 3-4 Throwing Knives (by hitting Lorian when Lothric was almost dead) so no problem.
  • Maybe you can even stop damaging Lorian and equip Flynn’s Ring etc. and then kill Lorian when you are ready for maximum burst in the revival phase.
  • If you have a lot of Faith you can also use Lightning Urns, since Lorian is weak to lightning damage.
  • I think attacking Lothric only while he is reviving his brother requires too much Consumables spend on Lorian.

    Soul of Cinder

  • Easy fight, as expected, since it’s an easy fight for a ranged player in general.
  • I dropped four stacks of Throwing Knives at the gate and just spammed them from afar. I unequipped all armor and equipped Flynn’s Ring, since he can barely hit you. Would not use RTSR though.
  • Also weak to lightning damage in case you used Lightning Urns on the Twin Princes.
  • I was lucky that he did not heal once, although you can throw Duel Charms to prevent the heal over time.
