How to get Compression

Before we get started, here are a few things to remember

• Digital Audio Cable – [vbaudio.com]
• ASIO4ALL – [asio4all.org]
• Reaper.
• Any vst, that does compression

First, you need to install Virtual Audio Cable. It will require a restart.

You will need ASIO4ALL once you have installed VAC. This is to avoid terrible latency.

Next, install Reaper. Technically, it’s a paid program but you get 60 days of free trial. It works almost the same as winrar.

Last, if you need any compression vst, I recommend Xfer’s OTT compressor because it is completely cost-free and you can use anything you want.

Setting it up

Before we can open reaper, we need to set VAC on our computer as our output.

Next, open Reaper.

Set your Audio system to ASIO

Next, scroll down to ASIO configuration

Then, click on the wrench

Make sure to turn on your headphones as well as the Virtual Audio Cable

When you close the ASIO Config, your devices should be set as shown.

Next, return back to the main Reaper windows and right-click to Insert New Song

Click on Record Arm/Disarm

Now you should have access to your desktop audio. Now you can add VST effects on your desktop audio. Click the FX button

Select the VST option you want to use.

You can now modify the VST to make the audio sound your preferred. Reaper must remain open so that the audio effect continues to work.

Other OSes

The process is almost identical for OSX. Reaper will do the same, but ASIO4ALL won’t work. You will need to use OSX’s sound drivers instead.

EasyEffects is Linux software that handles all your Linux needs. You can also use pulseaudio, pipewire, and other programs to help you with your drivers.

Conclusion

Although it is a tricky workaround, I think it’s worth it for the additional sound information that you can get from compressing my audio as well as the fact that I don’t have to turn my audio up very high.
