Information on the World of Mercenaries game mode and walkthroughs of maps to make it easier.

General Introduction

This guide is still a work in progress, some maps need full guides and others just need minor edits/images adding. I hope it helps regardless. These are also not the fastest guides, but give a strategy to completing the map with all objectives being complete.

What is World of Mercenaries?

It’s a PvE mode, similar to Dynasty Warriors, only smaller scope. You get a main objective and then there are bonus objectives which give you additional rewards. Ontop of there is a bond system, using the heros you have unlocked to gain additional bonus effects to your general and army which is only available in this mode.

Why play this mode?

It’s something different to do and mixes up the game a little ontop of that you can get exclusive skins through completeing bonus objectives. Plus challenging yourself against the higher maps and figuring out strategies can be fun.

What do i need to play this mode?

Not much really, just be online on the right times when WoM is open and you should have a starter hero that’s competent enough to get you started. The more heros you own the better this mode becomes and the easier and more interesting you can make it through the bond system. Also to progress in this mode you will need a fair amount of time as leveling up heros can be a real grind.

Which hero should i play?
That’s entirely up to you. Currently the most useful heros are shielded tanks, they are just so flexible. If you want to play as a DPS hero then the best ones currently are archers. Cavalry have a tough time being useful in any map currently. Eventually if you want to min max then you will need to get everyone leveled up for their bonds.

Why can i only play x map?

There are currently 2 zones which are unlocked and they are both open for 2 hours at a time, switching to the other after every 2 hours. To check which one is avalible at which time just go to the WoM map and look at the top left where it has the days listed, hover over that and it’ll give you the times for each zone. In addition to this you need to gain reputation in each map to unlock the next map, which can be quiet the grind.

Zone 1 consists of Cesaro, Aujericho, State of Monk Order and Sanctuary

Zone 2 consists of Eastern Source of War, Northern Yan, Sanqi and Zhongting

Additionally you may not have the hero star requirement to play the map. Higher level maps require higher star heroes. Also you may not have the reputation to enter that map. You can check that by hovering over the map you want to play to see what reputation you need.

Why can’t i play x hero?

Heros are tied to certain zones, for instance Zone 2 is only for heroes from the Holy Kingdom
Ontop of this your hero might not reach the requirement to play the map. For instance you need a 1* hero to play Aujericho which you gain by leveling a hero to 11.

Leveling and hero materials

Leveling up your heroes is a core part of this game mode. Each level up grants you base stat increases, for instance increased HP and damage for your hero AND troops which can be incredibly powerful. The differance between a level 3 Joan and 25 is massive. Once you hit a certain level you can tier up, which gives you an aditional star. These are needed to enter certain maps which are more difficult than the other ones and have different objectives. Ontop of that getting all the way up to 51 and 5* unlocks Legendary mode which is an even harder instance of maps you’ve played before.

Here is a breakdown of what’s needed to tier up your heros:

Materials

The basic materials you get are: Raw Meat, Ore, Hard Wood. You will need a lot of these so i recommend you load up on these if you want to tier up multiple heroes. Ontopof this they have another use, once you have 100 of the basic materials you can combine them into a EXP ball which gives 5000 general EXP. This is not worth it however, unless you want to sell it on the market, because you get 5000 general exp from 100 basic materials if you were to use each individually.

The rarer materials you need for higher tier heroes and are rather hard to aquire, needing to be in map 3 minimum. to even have a chance to get one. You get 2 chests per map if you complete it and have the benefit pack which only has a small chance to get a random Advanced/Epic material. You can use the higher tier materials, it gives you 2500 general exp but because of how rare they are and they give so little it’s not recommended.

Mercenary shop

You can break down class/faction materials into fragments which allows you to change unwanted materials into ones that you need. But breaking down a material gives you 1 fragment and you need 4 to purchase 1 material from the shop. For this reason and because they are so rare, i heavily recommend that you DO NOT do this.

Class Materials

The tanslations of these items is terrible and has different names on different menus so i’ve matached the names to the Mercenary shop, with spelling corrections. Hopefully the icons are helpful enough to show you which it relates to if the wording is off.

Bond Information

Bonds are a form of progression in the WoM game mode. They give certain effects by meeting the requiements and achieving certain tiers. They can range from a minor HP buff to an on hit defbuff to enemy units.

The way to get higher tiers is to have more heroes with that bond and to get higher stars over the heroes in total.

The rule follows like so:

Inactive(Grey): Does not meet the requirements.
Basic(Green): 2 heroes
Primary(Blue): Atleast 2 heroes with 5* or greater
Intermediate(Pink): Atleast 4 heros with 15* or greater
Advanced(???): Atleast 6 heroes with 30* or greater

The only exception for the rule so far is Han Merc which follow a different set up, being:

Basic: 3 Heroes
Primary: Atleast 3 Heroes with 10* or greater
Advanced: Atleast 6 Heroes with 30* or greater

(If any dev is reading this, please change it to be like all the others! 3 is such a big investment for Han Mercs and making it work is barely achievable in any build! I’ll even take a slight nerf to the effect.)

There are two types of bond, you get 1 for the faction your hero represents and you get another for the class your hero is, refered to as Unit Bond. You cannot change them, they are preset by the game.

The numbers shown relate to X/Y/Z effect and always follow that order.

Bond Tips and examples

Some general tips are you should lean into the faction and class bond your hero starts with. You should also look at what you feel would be more useful for that hero, got a ranged hero? Well ranged damage and pushing damage as far as possible would be beneficial. Where as a shielder unit would rather have a mix of general damage, HP and recovering troops. You can only have 6 heroes in your bonds so this is where part of the strategy comes into it, creating different builds.

Let’s take Alexander for example.

Faction bond: Alliance
Class bond: Shielder

So for this i would recommend getting atleast 1 more hero for both Alliance and Shielder. To achieve this we can just use Caeser or Leonidas as they both also have those bonds. This would give us the basic bond effect of 1% regen every 2 seconds while disengaged and 1.25% army HP, ontop of that our hero gets take -30% damage at 5% HP.

If we wanted to get to the next tier we would need a combination of those 3 heros to meet the requirement of 2+ heroes and atleast 5*.

So we could have 3* Alexander, 1* Ceasar and 1* Leonidas which would achieve 5* and make us get to the Primary effect tier, giving: 2% regen every 2 seconds for Alliance and 2.5% Army HP and our hero takes -30% damage at 10% HP.

But that wouldn’t be worth it, as it uses up 3 slots to achieve when we could use that slot for something else, so going 3/4* on Alexander and 1/2* on Ceasar or Leonidas would be best. There is no 4th hero to currently achieve the Intermediate tier in Alliance.

Here are a few set ups i’ve made for some heroes which i believe work well together in the current state of the game: (As of the latest patch they have removed zone 3 heroes so you cannot get some of the bonds. Regardless, the explinations should still steer you in the right direction.)

Alexander

Zhang Fei, Diao Chan, Zhang Bao, Zhuge Liang, Joan, Leonidas.
(2 Field Commander, 3 Shielder, 2 Alliance, 2 Emperor Wu, 2 Harbinger, 2 Longqi Army)

My reasoning for this set up is Alexander needs to be able to stand in a choke point and hold it for as long as possible. Some things are debateable here with my choices and some were just filler to get a bonus but i still think this works well.

Field Commander: So we can summon troops we lost quicker, if we lose troops often.
Shielder: More HP for our units and the Class exclusive of less damage is nice.
Alliance: HP regen for when our troops are out of combat, this keeps them alive longer.
Emperor Wu: Extra damage for our army and for our hero.
Harbinger: More attack speed for our army, this is very helpful in Phalax formation as it knocks down enemies more often, which in turn improves our tankyness and ability to hold a choke better.
Longqi Army: Extra damage for our army.

Hattori Hanzo

Ma Chao, Zhuge Liang, Hua Mulan, Gerald, Baldwin I, Arthur
(2 Emperor Wu, 2 Marauder, 2 Field Commander, 2 Zendar, 2 Old Sect, 3 Stalker, 1 Han Merc)

Hanzo is an hit and run kind of guy or sneak on your flank person and wreck you and his low armour and HP are tough to overcome, so we specialise mostly in damage with some ways of getting out of trouble if needed, don’t forget that Hanzo also has an innate passive where him and his troops heal outside of combat.

Emperor Wu: Army damage, can’t go wrong here.
Marauder: More movement speed, kinda not the best, but it fits with the other heroes we take, so i just filled it in.
Field Commander: Hanzo’s troops are frail, so being able to replensh our troops if something goes bad is great.
Zendar: More damage and everyone benefits from it, yep!
Old Sect: Hero damage, a lot of it, helps us get the killing blow for heals.
Stalker: Hero damage and a heal on kill, definate must.

Lyu Bu

Guan Yu. Zhuge Liang, Gerald, Baldwin I, Hattori Hanzo, Arthur
(2 Devastator, 2 Field Commander, 2 Emperor Wu, 2 Zendar, 2 Old Sect, 2 Stalker, 1 Longqi Army, 1 Marauder)

Lyu Bu seems more like a Hero focused character to me, with his units being more filler than anything, so i used the bonds to increase the damage i do with this hero and his stats, rather than on putting much on his troops.

Devastator: Marauding is a very powerful effect and as you’ll probably end up without units rather quickly, him being able to soak up more damage and/or finish the fight faster with his damage boost is great.
Field Commander: More of a filler bond, but being able to resawn units more frequently when you are a killing machine is great.
Emperor Wu: More attack and HP is always good, plus the fear on hit can be useful.
Zendar: Extra damage to nearby enemies? Yes please. We’ll always be nearby anything we are going to hit.
Old Sect: A hell of a lot of hero damage, yes, yes!
Stalker: More hero damage, sounds good to me! Shame we don’t get the unit exclusive bonus though.

Zhao Yun

Guan Yu, Lyu Bu, Zhuge Liang, Gerald, Baldwin I, Joan
(2 Field Commander, 2 Emperor Wu, 2 Devastator, 2 Longqi Army, 2 Marauder, 2 Old Sect, 1 Holy Kingdom, 1 Stalker)

Zhao Yun is more of a hero skirmisher, smash in, retreat, go again, so for this i focused on damage and speed as well as being able to recruit units faster. Big problem with this build is when you lose your horse, you’ve lost it. You cannot gain another unless you take one from an enemy or from your own units. But you do get a heal which does mitigate that a little.

Field Commander: As Zhou Yun has 20 units, respawning troops means we summon 4 cavalry instead of 3 like others, this makes it all the more worthwhile. Ontop of this his units have low HP, although he can heal, they will die eventually.
Emperor Wu: A bit more damage, mostly filler bond.
Devastator: Powerful Marauding effect, helps us tank more, do more damage and even heal a little.
Longqi Army: A hell of a lot more damage if we can get the proc, so yes please!
Marauder: More movement speed = More damage + better charges + running away quicker.
Old Sect: A lot more hero damage.

Huang Yueying

Sun Shiangziang, Zhang Fei, Xiao Qiao, Zhang Bao, Huang Zhong, Edward I, Sybilla
(4 Longqi Army, 2 Predator, 2 Harbinger, 2 Eastern Wu, 2 Swift Shooter, 1 Holy Kingdom, 1 Ranger)

Huang Yueying is a ranged damage dealer, using crossbows which can shoot incredibly fast. To capitalise on this we push all the damage we can. Playing a ranged hero it more matters about your positioning than survivability so we don’t get any really, just some ranged damage reduction as it fits with others.

Longqi Army: Must have, it’s her starting bond and can give a huge hero damage increase on kill.
Predator: Inflicts a debuff on hit which makes the enemy take more range damage, probably the biggest damage multiplier here.
Harbinger: More attack speed, yes please, we’ll have gatling guns instead of assault rifles now!
Eastern Wu: More a filler bond, helps with engaging other ranged troops solo though i guess as it’s less damage from ranged attacks.
Swift Shooter: Just damage. Smaller bonus than i’d like but it’s fine.

Zone 1 Intro & Cesaro: St.Alfonso

Zone 1 consists of Cesaro, Aujericho, State of Monk Order and Sanctuary. The progression following that order. The heroes you are allowed to use for this zone are:

Sun Shangxiang, Zhao Yun, Xiahou Yuan, Ling Tong, Huang Yueying, Guan Yu, Diao Chan, Xiao Qiao, Zhang Bao, Ma Chao, Bai Qi, Lyu Bu, Han Xin, Zhuge Liang, Hua Mulan, Hattori Hanzo, Ceasar, Leonidas, Li Guang and Alexander.

The following rewards are for any map in Cesaro.
The rewards you gain for completeing the main objective are as follows and these change slightly based on performance:

  • Lord xp
  • Silver
  • PvE Hero xp

The rewards you gain for completeing the secondary objective are as follows:

  • 30 Lord xp
  • 15 Silver
  • 100 PvE general xp

Ontop of this you gain reputation for playing this map even if you win or lose which is needed to access Aujericho.

There are 3 different maps you can get here, those being: St.Alfonso, St.Alfonso Rain and Mecelone. I will go over each and provide a general guide as to how to complete them, these shouldn’t hold too much of a challenge for most players which is a good place to start if you are just getting into WoM.

St.Alfonzo

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Secure the Village

Secondary Objective:

  • Secure the Village in 5 mins.

Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 1 Archer, 2 Anything.
Pretty much any combination of Heroes works in this map as it’s not too difficult.

This map isn’t difficult at all, the objectives are simple and it’s just a slaughter fest. The main force will be in the middle of the village so most people should head that direction, atleast 1 person (preferably one with shields should break off to the left of the map as there is a group running circles around a platform and to the left of that, by the windmill is a group of crossbowmen.

After that you should head to the north part of the village and kill off the archers on the hill then join your team mates in the middle of the village. Be weary of enemies wrapping around the buildings and coming to attack your flank as they like to run all of the place. Once the majority of the forces are killed here then a few waves of enemies spawn at the north of the map. Consisting of a wave of Cavalry, Infantry and then archers.

I’d recommend atleast 1 person to break off from the main fight and to flank the archers once the frontline has been set up, just to speed up the fight.

Cesaro: St.Alfonzo Rain

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Protect the gaurd captain

Secondary Objective:

  • Protect all gaurd captains

Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 3 Anything.
This map can be more challenging than the previous one, especially if you are going for the sedconday objective. But once you play it a few times you can understand how the spawns work and where in general to position yourself.

The best strategy is to have 1 person on each point and have 2 people wander between the points which need the most help. If that’s not possible because you are with bots of uncooperative players then you can roughly figure out what is going to happen by the spawns.
A seems to be more popular to have enemies attack and can prove the hardest to defend if you are sitting on C as it’s quiet far away.

The enemy spawns in waves at either the top middle or bottom middle (Where Caesar* and Leonidas* sit) and then they rush straight towards point A, B or C. The spawns also change every time you play so it might not happen the same way it did the previous time you played. Most of the waves will come and hit 1 point at a time but a few later on will hit two at once so be prepared for those waves at about the 3rd.

Once you hear the horn blow and the voice lines play about reinforcements are coming there will always be calvary coming from C side and it will go around the north western building and directly to the C guard captain and then push further on so you should kill these quickly. Not long after that the final wave will spawn and will either go to C or A from the spawn points at the top/bottom middle. If C, great! You are already there. If they run to A then you have to finish up the fight quick and rush over there to kill the enemies and finish the map.

*Killing Caesar and/or Leonidas seems to do nothing. So only do it if you are really bored and are confident you’ll win quick.
Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries

Cesaro: Mecelone

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Escort the battering ram

Secondary Objective:

  • Kill the Alliance Officers (Caesar and Leonidas)

Recommended Heroes: 1 Alexander, 2 Shielders, 2 Anything.

This is probably the hardest of the 3 Cesaro maps, especially if you are trying to do the secondary objective so make sure you are aware of what is happening around the battering ram at all times.

If you want to complete the secondary objective then i suggest playing Alexander for his Phylax formation as he should be able to solo it. The alliance officers are rather tanky and can easily wipe you if you try to solo with most Heroes or don’t pay attention.

I recommend atleast 2 people follow the ram at all points. It gets ambushed rather frequently so they are needed to prevent your Auxillaries from dying, losing too many makes the ram stay still until more have spawned and run to the ram.

To start with i would have every rush out infront of the ram and kill the forces on the hills, the archers and the shielded units. Once the ram gets about just past the rock i would have Alexander or 2 heroes head up the cliff to engage the Alliance Officers. Leonidas is your first Officer to kill. Set up your Phalanx formation at a safe distance and then use 5 to advance a little forward to engage Leonidas. He will be in schiltron formation and as soon as you are within range he’ll throw his spears and run to engage. The second this happens Ceasar will begin running from the other side of the map so you are on a bit of a timer to deal with Leonidas quickly. Sometimes they lose interest and will run to the right most of the cliff to stand by the flags, so if you are missing 1-6 units, they may be there. By this time your done with this fight the ram should be between 40-60% of the way to it’s destination so rejoin that if needed. if not there is a spawn that happens at 65% which is at the around the top right sword icon on the map above, so you can wait there for that.

The people following the cart shouldn’t have much trouble, just keep slightly ahead of the ram and kill everything you can. Although at one point, at about 37% Fredrick will spawn around the house to the bottom left and flank the ram from behind, so be weary of that as you may already be engage in a fight up ahead. There is also a small hill which the ram passes by around the middle of the map which has infantry on it aswell as crossbow men so getting rid of these around this time would help a lot, from this point i would head to the right most house, just by it and kill any units here. Also a group of enemies spawn from this house too around this point.

Once the infantry that spawned around 65% happens then no more will spawn in the village and it’s a free run for your ram to head to the destination. You need to rush into the end point where Enemy reinforcements will spawn from the little barricade on the right, all at once at 84%. This consists of a Catherine(Cavalry), Edward I(Archers) and a few infantry squads. Edward will immediately put down barricades so if you have cavalry be cautious. I recommend one person sets up just to the north of where they spawn and attacks straight away and the others just to the left. If you are feeling brave and already really ahead, if every stands on the spawn area you will engage the enemy as they spawn and clear them out potentially much faster.
It does not matter if you win this fight, as long as the ram reaches 100% you will win.

Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 1 Archer, 2 Anything.
You need atleast 2 tanky heros with shields for splitting to do outpost B and C as their are archers in there which pack a punch. 1 archer can be helpful for killing the crossbowmen the other side of the bridge. This map can get messy if you do not have any shielders as the outposts have a lot of archers in the back which are hard to break through to.

To start with everyone should engage the enemies infront of you, be weary of the two handed units who will join the fight soon after your engagement to the right, just under the ledge. Once the enemies are wiped out or flee back to the outpost you will split into 2 groups. 1 shielder and 1 other should proceed to outpost 1 and kill everything in there, while the rest move towards the centre of the map, where the bridge is. Along the way you’ll see a group of shielder units running across the bridge who will run directly to outpost A. Atleast 1 unti should intercept and kill as many as possible there. While the other two should engage the spear and shield units who are waiting between two rocks. Around this time Outpost A should be finishing up and they should run to the bridge to regroup.

At this point if your ranger is at the bridge you should shoot the crossbow men across the other side of the bridge, trying to kill as many as possible. Meanwhile 2 others should engage the other set of spear shielders between the rocks while the rest of the people from outpost A run to get here. Once they are cleaned up you should all set up to cross the bridge, pushing the shielder units and wiping them out. Be weary of the Joan who will place an isabella flag in the back. If you can do, snipe it or run through to break it with your hero. Once through the bridge kill any remaining crossbow men and then split into 2 teams again.
Team B which should consist of 3 units(atleast 1 shielder) should head to outpost B straight away.
Team C consisting of the final 2(Atleast 1 shielder) should rush to C.

Team B will have the harder time out of the two as reinforcements come from just to the north of the oupost and if they are not killed or engaged will run to C. To start the fight make sure you are all together and engage the cavalry and kill them off quickly. To start the oupost i would have the shielder person enter the western side of the outpost and the others to go around the ledge to the eastern entrance so you have 2 lines of engagement. Most of the enemy will rush out to attack you with archers in the back firing at you and some shielders with Baldwin sitting in the south eastern side of the outpost. Once you have broken through the inital infantry, push inside to wipe the remaining forces, focusing on the archers first to protect your allies. Around this time be weary of the oupost entrance as a group of cavalry, spears and archers will spawn and come to attack you. If you have a ranger with you, they can stand outside the outpost to get some good shots on the spearmen and then flee before the cavalry get there to wait for the rest of the group to finish in the outpost. Now that Outpost B is completed you should head staight to the bridge where the final battle will happen unless C is struggling, in which case 1/2 should head there to help out.

Team C should rush stragiht to outpost C, stopping a bit before it as you will see cavalry sitting in the fields, get your units together and push in to kill them. Grouping up is a must in the attack as they will break through your units easily and run around attacking you if they are spread out. Once the majority of them are killed both should engage the trrops on the eastern entrance. A group of 2 handers will come from inside the outpost to reinforce the defending spear units. Be careful of aggroing the western entrance spearmen. Once you have killed the eastern troops, your shielder should push in first with shields up as their is an archer sitting in the north western part of the outpost who will barricade himself in. Kill any troops inside the outpost, killing the archers last as they are tough to get to and then leave out the western entrance to kill the troops there, if any remain. If none remain then run out the eastern entrance and head straight for the bridge. If B is struggling then you should run towards the bridge and then go from there to C to avoid killing unnecessary troops.

The outposts are now all completed and you should now all be at the bridge/heading to it. A huge force of enemies will spawn from the main castle and run straight for the bridge to kill our allied troops. Do not engage them too early as it will spread the troops out and they’ll run all over the map. Don’t worry about the cavalry too much as the AI seems to kill them off pretty well Wait until a bit of a blob forms around our AI troops and push in, killing anything here. Atleast 1 person should move around the enemy to attack the crossbow men in the back or they’ll do some real damage. Once this army is destroyed this mission is complete.

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Protect base form assassins

Secondary Objective:

  • Base HP stays above 80%
  • Get 100 seige kills

5 waves. 1-2 south, 3 south east+west, 4-5 All

Recommended Heroes: 1 Alexander, 2 Shielders, 2 Anything.
Alexander is an almost must in this map as he can hold a choke hold under the seige weapon by himself. If you don’t have an Alexander it can be sketchy with 1/2 Diao Chan/Leonidas but doable. 2 shielders are nice to protect the ramparts up top where the main gate is. The other two can be anything really.

First thing you need to know is the assassins are the only ones which attack the base and they rush straight towards it, spending minimal time attacking any troops nearby so you need to focus on killing these ones and blocking their route to the base.

When you first spawn in everyone should head to the south gate. Alexander should put his troops in Phalanx formation in the gateway, but not too far forward as we will need to use the oil seige weapon to drop it ontop of the enemy. Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
(You will need someone standing here even if you do not have an Alexander. Good alternatives are any shielder with a formation, Diao Chan, Ceasar and Leonidas. They don’t do as good of a job but it does it well enough to get by.)
The rest should put thier units up top, archers in the middle to fire down on enemies and 2 infantry on either side of the ramps to block troops from getting up top.Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
One person should sit on the oil at the start of the wave and then just as the enemy is about to hit the troops downstairs begin using the oil to kill off the troops. After that just defend the top from the waves of enemies that spawn.

Wave 2 is simple enough, it’s the same as wave 1 only with a different set up of units, they focus more on coming up the ramps. There will be archers in this wave and they can do some real damage as they come up the ramp so have your shields up prepared or kill them off with archers before they get up here. If you leak enemy units from going up top they will head down the inside ramp and sit on the platform shooting arrows into the AI defending that choke point.

Wave 3 sends troops to the eastern and western gate aswell as the south, although they are a small strikeforce and easily dispatched. Send just 1 person either side. So now you will be left with Alexander on the south, 1 Shielder, 1 Anything. Then have 1 Anything in the east, 1 Anything in the west. (The east and west AI will surive 1 wave before dying to the next one, if unprotected.) Once the East/West is clear, move to the platform where the archers would go to to kill them, if needed, if not help anyone who needs it then proceed back to your post. The south gate will get a mix of units as before and the two up top will have a harder time clearing the enemy but it’s manageable.

Wave 4 adds the northern gate into the mix now. To not strech yourself too thin i would recommend leaving it unprotected. The east and west gate should clean their 1 group of enemies each and rush straight to the north to kill off what came through. Alternatively, if you have a second Alexander or are confident, then put your troops in formation to protect the entrance and pour oil down on the enemies that come. No enemies will come up top so kill anything at the bottom. The southern gate has a rough time up top, so be on your gaurd and try to kill off as much as you can. Get a good oil drop on the enemy and bottom should do just fine. Cavalry come from the south half way through this wave so be aware of that.

Wave 5 Again all 4 directions will get waves of enemies. Everyone should hold the same positions they have been so far. 2/3 south, 1 East+West, 0/1 North. The south gets a bit of a break if you are up top as this is a thin wave for you. Kill off what comes up top and run off to protect the north. The gate needs a good oil drop on the enemies that come or you will get overwhelmed. If you did it well then this should be cleaned up quickly and you can run off to help the north too. East and west just kill your 1 squard of troops and then go to the north, fighting on your respective sides. The north gate is in for a rough time, a huge amount of enemies spawn here. At first there will be like 3/4 troops of units heading straight through the gate. If you are protecting that gate with Alexander then pour oil then head straight downstairs to help clear up what is left. If you stand up top then you will get swarmed by 2 handed units which will ruin your day. These DPS units will go to the middle east/west lanes and kill off the AI there. You want to clean the north gate fast as cavalry will come next and they can break through if there is still lots of enemies. If noone is protecting then they will go to the easter/western sides of the stronghold and then run straight to the main camp. After this no more enemies spawn so kill off any remaining units which are on the map.

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Make sure no agent is KIA

Secondary Objective:

  • Secure agents in 8 mins
  • Secure the garisson in 6 mins

Recommended Heroes: 1 Archer, 1 Alexander, 1 Shielder, 2 Infantry.
1 Archer is pretty much mandatroy for this map as you need to kill archers ontop of towers which infantry cannot go up so you can only shoot with ranged attacks. Having 2 tanky units in this map is needed to hold the lines so i recommend 2 shielders.

This map is tough if you don’t know how it works and rush through it, not working as a team. When you know how it all works, it’s a total breeze. It does involve splitting up into 4 groups initially so hopefully the team you are in will work together in it.

Team 1 which should consist of 1 Alexander and 1 DPS should head to point A through the middle of the map across the dirt road and up over the steps, you will take archer fire but that’s ok. Alexander should set his troops in phalnx formation at the gate and then immediately call for Agent A. The other person whom is with you should set up behind your troops and engage the troops that spawn when they reach the front line. As soon as you call Agent A a pack of 2hander units spawn from the gate and these need to be killed for the agent to make his escape. His escape point is through the gate where the enemy spawned. Not long into the fight there will be a lage pack of enemies that come down the ramp to the north east. Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
So move your phalanx formation to block them on the dirt hill, you don’t have to move far, just like a 90 degree angle change will be enough to hold them off. Most of the spawn troops should be dead by this point if you were fast enough. This pack from the north east does not need to be killed. But for safety i recommend it as if it’s pulled it can ruin your day. Once this is dealt with, head to the south east point, where agent B is.

Team 2 is just 1 Archer. You will mostly follow Team A, just on the steps you will turn onto the small pathway like ramparts and begin killing off all archers in this fortification. There is a roaming pack of enemies with shields that patrol by B. Do not engage them as you cannot handle them alone. The archers are up in the towers of the castle so you may have to run around to spot where they all are. But this is your whole job. You should finish it by about the time Agent B gets called. Once you have killed them all, you can stand on the wooden platform ready to help with Agent B spawns.

Team 3 should be a shielder, your job is to break off down the southern path and go to the fortification in the middle of the map. Beware of pulling the roaming B pack of enemies in here. You can take some of them if you are fast enough, but engaging the whole pack in the middle of all them archers is a bad time. There is a pack of 2handed units in the middle of this camp. Kill them off and 4 crossbowmen will spawn from the wooden tower and sit on the steps, kill them off and then head around the eastern blockades to kill the archers sitting on the castle wall. After that you want to go back down to the sothern pack and engage the roaming B pack. This pack needs to be killed as it will add even more trouble for Agent B if left alive. Once dealt with, head to Agent B.

Team 4 would be preferable to be an anti cav unit as that’s what you’ll mostly be dealing with but it’s the easiest job. You stay by spawn. Just to the right you’ll see an opening in the fortifcation. Basicly right here is where crossbowmen spawn once Agent A is spawned. Kill off these then stand about on the hill of the central path. 2 packs of Cavalry come down this road, i would wait until they stop completely and then run in and kill them all off. Once you have finished with this, join Team 3 in the south to kill off the roaming pack if needed. If finished, then head to Agent B.
Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries

Agent B

Now you won’t have to split up as much now and the map is pretty much completely clear of enemies. So now it’s just dealing with the enemy that spawn in when you call the Agents.
Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Alexander wants to set up just north of Agent B to hold a choke point between the houses and the fence. The archer should sit on the wooden platform and shoot into the enemy that will engage Alexander. And 1 more should help attack the enemies that come here.

The others will sit next to Agent B as enemies will spawn by the stone gate just to the east of Agent B. The shielder should be in front and engage those enemies and the other should help.
There is a pack of crossbow men that sit in a raised wooden platform which don’t need to be killed, but if anyone has something to kill them off then do so as it reduces casualties.
Once everything is killed, bar the crossbowmen Agent B will flee through the stone gate. Onto Agent C.
Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries

Agent C

This will also be split in 2 teams again, Alexander should set up at the choke point on the dirt path through the centre of the map between the house and stables. The archer should stay put ont he wooden platform, eventually coming down to the hill if you need a better shot on the enemies. And the other sitting just behind Alexanders troops to engage once the line has been formed. There will be a lot of enemies coming to this line so make sure AlexanderBlood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
has a healthy troop amount and adjust if things need to be. There will be a pack of Cavalry coming from the east gate. And then 2 packs of infantry from Agent B and another pack of Archers from B as well. The archers shouldn’t be too much of an issue as they’ll hang back a bit. But Fredrick and the Cavalry can break through the front line somewhat easily, so be on your guard.

Richard will spawn in at the east gate so a shielder and another should stand ready to engage him and then join the other fight once finished, killing any cavalry that break through if there is any.

Once all the troops are dead then the Agent will flee from the gates where Richard spawns and the mission will complete. This takes just under 10 seconds from the point of him running, so keep that in mind if you are close on time.

Zone 2 Intro & Eastern Source of War: Northern Wei Commandry

Zone 2 consists of Eastern Source of War, Northern Yan, Sanqi and Zhongting. The progression following that order. You may only use heroes from the Holy Kingdom faction for these maps and they are as follows:

Isabella, Richard I, Baldwin IV, Edward I, Sibylla and Joan.

The following rewards are for any map in Eastern Source of War.
The rewards you gain for completeing the main objective are as follows and these change slightly based on performance:

  • Lord xp
  • Silver
  • PvE Hero xp

The rewards you gain for completeing the secondary objective are as follows:

  • 30 Lord xp
  • 15 Silver
  • 100 PvE general xp

Ontop of this you gain reputation for playing this map even if you win or lose which is needed to access Northern Yan.

There are 2 different maps you can get here, those being: Northern Wei Commandry and Yanning Commandry. I will go over each and provide a general guide as to how to complete them, these are a large step up in difficulty from Zone 1s maps, so be prepared to struggle and or lose a few times before you figure things out. Also try to have a few bonds set up so you atleast get some bonus’ before you begin playing here.

Northern Wei Commandry

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Secure the miltary post

Secondary Objective:

  • Kill 4(5) officers in 10 mins

Recommended Heroes: 3 Shielders, 1 Ranged, 1 Anything.

If you do not want to complete the seconday objective, just go to the house in the middle with your whole team and kill everything in there together. Otherwise continue reading for how to complete them both.

If you do not have an archer you will have to split into 2 teams and 3 people go straight for the hill and 2 others go to the south hill. Ontop of them there will be an Imperial Officer which you have to kill to get credit. Be weary of archer fire as they can mess you up really quickly. On the right path it is possible to suicide run to kill the Imperial Officer and get out as you only have to kill the officer.

If you do have an archer then 1 person should escort him and the rest go towards the hill straight infront of you. The ranger will try to snipe the Imperial Officer on the south ledge while pushing towards the enemy base towards the east. Stand by about where the tree line is, just past the small hut and get ready to snipe the fleeing Impterial Officer. If you fail this and he gets away just kill the Imperial Officer on the ledge as you only need to kill 4. After that rejoin your team mates.

Once you are all comfortable and back together, minus the archer, form up just infront of the open square and begin your push into them together. Multiple waves of enemies will spawn in the courtyard and will also spawn at the doors to the houses. Once you have killled a fair few, reinfocements will run from the Enemy patrol base and head straight for the square through the eastern archway. Kill them when they arrive and then the final wave or two will spawn in the courtyard, consisting of 2 Imperial Officers and their troops. Kill everything in this courtyard and you will have completed the mission.

Eastern Source of War: Yanning Commandry

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Make sure the knight order surives

Secondary Objective:

  • Make sure all lords survive

Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 1 ranged, 2 melee.

For this map you need to rush into position straight away if you want to complete the secondary objective as the AI can get overwhelmed really easily. For this you will need to split into 3 teams, 2 take the eastern gate, 1 takes the north gate, 2 take the western gate. You will pretty much hold that the whole game.

Straight away it will pick between east and west and send a large force that side along with smaller forces to the middle and east and then it will switch sides, sending a large force to the opposite side rather soon after, so the amount of troops can easily overwhelm you.
The waves consists of a large amount of melee units then followed by a few archers, occassionally there will be cavalry archers or calvarly which can be a bit problematic, so be prepared once they come as they can be deadly if you leave them up and the next wave of troops join aswell.
Pick your fights so you are fighting WITH your AI team members as they can help clean the enemy up quicker. Fighting without them can result in you getting wiped.

After a few waves the commander will say that they are sending a huge force to attack and this is where a large amount of troops is sent to both east and west along with some to the north. Destroy every troop in this wave and you win the battle.

There are 2 different maps you can get here being: Wuchun and Yumeng Lake. I will go over each and provide a general guide as to how to complete them. Be prepared for these maps, they are a significant step up from anything you may have faced before and the objectives for Yumeng Lake can be confusing.

Wuchun

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Destroy atleast 4 wargons in 3 waves

Secondary Objective:

  • Destroy all 6 wargons
  • Eliminate the enemy elite soldiers

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 1 Archer, 2 anything.

Important Information: Only the Sergeants need to be killed to destroy a Wargon. There are 6 total per Wargon. So if you mess up and one gets past your line, rush to kill only the sergents.

This map can be really hard, espcially as your first time playing and if you have no coordination. So hopefully you have some people in your team that know what they are doing. For this you will split into 3 teams eventually, but from the start only split into 2.

First the archer should rush straight infront of him, going to the other side of the map to get up the cliff. You should kill anything that might be a problem when crossing, but once you are up there and about half way along the cliff you are set up for the game now. From here just down towards the middle of the map there is the Elite units. When you are safe your job is to kill them off. You should be completely safe from here so don’t worry too much.
Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
The others should go to the right, past the fence to kill the 3 sets of troops infront of you in the bottom lane. Once they are killed, continue on to kill the archers just around the side of the bottom house. You’ll then head to kill the platoon around the Wargon on the bottom lane, which should be close to you now. Make sure your shields are up as they will destroy you with archer fire and javelins if you don’t.

Now that that is destroyed you need to make your way to the bottom fenced area with lights and such on the hill with a Diao Chan and Hua Mulan on it. This is going to be a tough fight. All 4 of you need to be in it to overcome it. Push in and make sure you are using all of your abilities and be careful when Mulan uses her throwing knife ability, that can easily wipe you out if you don’t put your shields up.

At around xx:xx time 2 more wargons spawn. Top lane and Mid lane. Top lane should be fine to leave alone with the archer, but if you want to be safe 1 of you can leave to join him. The other 3 should push up in the middle of the lane and go between the two houses with the archers and a set of infantry on the right, killing them off and waiting/engaging the troops around here.

Once they are killed and both Wargons are destroyed it’s time to finish up the elite units, if there is any left. The Second set of Elite units if not killed by archer fire can destroy even a full squad of units with shields up, so be extra careful. Fist engage the Ling Tong from the fork in the road on the middle lane, pushing up only enough to pull him as you don’t want to fight both him and the archers. Kill off his troops with everyone you’ve got and then push into the Bu Lian all together with all your troops to make her change into melee and kill them off as quick as possible.

Wave 3 spawns at 8:45 time remaining, so if you have completed everything else, this is just a waiting game now. I recommend 2 people stay in the mid lane, 1 on the bottom, 2 top. The bottom spot you want to stand in is just around the building to the south west, on the eastern side. The reason why is there is a big hill here which protects you from projectile attacks until they are directly infront of you, which means you can swoop in and kill them without too many losses.

Top should engage them in the middle of that ledge, hopefully killing them with relative ease.

Middle should stand at the intersection, using the houses and fences for cover until the Wargon is close, then engage them and kill them off.

Once your Wargon is defeated run to help whomevers is remaining, middle splitting 1 bottom, 1 top. Bottom going to mid then to top. Top going mid then the bot. Be careful of where you run to, if you try to run from behind it to catch up you will have a difficult time. Try to run to a spot infront of it which you can intercept it.

Blood of Steel - A complete guide to World of Mercenaries
Primary Objective

  • Breakthrough the frontline
  • Eliminate the reinforcements
  • Kill the Supreme Commander

Secondary Objective:

  • Kill the Supreme Commander in 12 mins
  • Kill 600 troops in 6 mins

Recommended Heroes: 2 Shielders, 1 Archer, 2 anything.

This map is an absolute nightmare to figure out and took much longer than it needed to from the translation being unclear and the objectives being vague, but nevertheless i have figured it out and will share with you.

The first objective is breakthrough the frontline. Well we kind of don’t have to do that at all. You need to follow the Commando Leader and kill off as much as you can around her in a large radius, she will run back and stand idle for 10 or so seconds. This is good! If not she will agro to any enemies within her radius and you will have to start over with the aggro timer.

If she doesn’t aggro onto an enemy for 10 seconds then she will run to either the eastern side, western side or stay in the middle. Follow her to which ever side she goes and then kill everything around there so she doesn’t agro to something again. She needs to not agro on anything for 10 seconds and then she will run in a diagonal direction to the middle of the map, infront of the morale posts, ignoring all enemies and lead the charge forward, which progresses to wave 2. 3 Mercenaries will join the battle at some point into the fight, heading to a random point in the front line, if you are quick enough i don’t think they spawn, kill them if they are close to the Leader as they can be annoying with aggro. They are: Hua Mulan, Qin Qiong and Aguda. Aguda can be a real pain because his cavalry can harrass the Commando Leader and aggro her constantly, kill them off quickly to stop that from happening.
Note: If you have the morale low from fighting around the Commando Leader at 5 mins left on quest 1 it will automaticly move onto wave 2 regardless of any of this.

If you did not complete the kill 600 troops quest yet, focus on that for the inital stage, then when done we progress to the real objective. This wave we only need to kill all the cavalry. Ma Chao and his units as well as Zhou Yunand his units. They like to run all over the map so it can be difficult to track them. But everyone should focus on this. Every cavalry unit counts as 2% morale. So you can figure out how many units are left based on that.

Once that is done you need to follow the wave forward and ignore the frontline completely. Split into two teams, 1 ranger, 1 anything goes to the east side of the frontline, the other 3 to the west. To the east and west will spawn cavalry archers so this is why we split up like that. These can be a pain so hopefully you have archers or a Joan or cavalry to help kill them off. Kill off as many as you can and after a bit of time the Supreme Commander will spawn. He is also part of the objective so move in to kill him and his troops. If the mission hasn’t finished and you are missing 3-5 troops, it’s probably cavalry archers somewhere and you’ll just have to hunt them down and want to smash your face up as they really like to play kiss chase.

It’s coming out soon i think! The heroes were in the bond menu last patch. RIP

Legend Mode

This mode makes the former maps you played much harder and has high requirements to even play.
You need:

  • 5 member team
  • Atleast 1 level 51 hero per player
  • 5-7 Zendar tokens depending on the map

This mode also follows the rules for zone 1 and 2 opening time so if you wanted to play a specific map you will need to plan around that.

You have a chance to aquire zendar tokens from Material/Skin chests in map 3 or higher in each zone. Those being: State of Monk order, Sanctuary, Sanqi and Zhongting.

Quick Tips

  • Shielder heroes survive a lot longer than other troops. If you are new or worried pick a tankier hero until you are comfortable.
  • Alexander is amazing in every map
  • Use General EXP to level your heroes to 11 once you get out of map 1 so you can earn more exp and faster.
  • Only use Advanced/epic materials for tier ups
  • Pick what your team needs in harder maps. Going 5 cavalry won’t earn you a win in almost map.
  • Get to 3* as fast as possible to grind State of the Monk Order. It’s the fastest map to get EXP and materials. And easy once you know what you are doing.
  • If you are new and fail don’t get too annoyed, as long as you learned something in the map just go again and adjust your strategy/heroes.
  • Reinforcing respawns 25% of your maximum troops, so don’t use it unless you are missing about that much or you’ll be stuck on cooldown before you can use it again.

Additional notes and thanks

This guide was made because randoms i played with were struggling in Zone 2 Yumeng Lake which i wanted to help other players understand the objectives so they could complete it easier. Ontop of that so i would have an easier time playing with randoms, rather than struggling through it and getting frustrated as noone listened to me explaining the objective. Althrough i am now done leveling in that zone so won’t have to go back there from when i publish this guide.

Another reaosn it was made was because i wanted more people to play the mode, i do enjoy it and if you like raids or grinding dungeons or things like that, then perhaps you can get into this mode too and make match making better. Currently there is at most on the EU server 2 teams in Map 3 in both zones. Most likely just 1 though and that group is a premade 5 man.

If you like a more PvE experiance and like games like Dynasty warriors, then this mode does have a feel like that, only a much more limited map pool. And gathering up hero level and coming up with bond builds for heroes is fun too!

Special Thanks

  • Thanks to Xaihou, i would have quit playing WoM if i didn’t find your post looking for people for this mode. Because of you and getting into groups i stayed and we pushed into to map 3 and have progressed quite a bit, now just needing the materials to push into map 4.
  • Argos, you’re just always grinding away at map 3 now, haha. So thanks for the teams and grinding for hours with me.
  • The russian grinders. You’re always with Argos so i see you playing a lot, decent players too so thanks, we wouldn’t have a 5 stack without you all!
  • To the new players i’ve met along the way that would listen and try to learn the maps and play the objectives well.
  • And to you, for reading this and wanting to be a better player and complete the maps consistantly. I hope to see you pushing up into map 3 and beyond, good luck in your progress.

If anyone wants to play WoM, is on the EU server, will listen to strategies and wants to push into map 3/4 then add me in game and hopefully we can get up to 3 groups of people farming map 3 constantly!
