If you didn’t turn off Steam Input, you are probably missing out on special features.
Disable Steam Input
Right-click the game in the library and select Properties.
Controller -> Override for Baldur’s Gate -> Disable Steam Input
What is the difference?
When using your gamepad directly, Steam tries to handle it similarly to a Steam controller, mimicking functions to access Big Picture mode easily.
Unfortunately, this blocks the game’s controller support.
When using the left control:
Steam Input is enabled.
The left control stick behaves like a mouse pointer, which is particularly useful in games that are designed specifically for mouse and keyboard
When Steam Input is enabled
The left control stick lets you steer your character like in a 3rd person game.
I suggest you disable Steam Input and use the native controller support for the game.
