SFOD – Special Forces Operational Detachment

Special Forces (SF) are highly selected and highly trained Soldiers that work in SUT (Small Unit Tactics of 12 man teams). Besides the HQ element, SF Soldiers specialize in 4 main categories (light-heavy weapons/engineering/communications/medical.

SF Soldiers are known as ‘force multipliers’, as they equal a platoon(+) or company(-) of conventional units.

Their primary mission is UW (Unconventional Warfare) but can also do Direct Action (DA) missions.

An SF structure/organization:

  • SF Team (SFOD-A) (6 per Company) (12 man team)

The smallest and most important element is the ‘A’ TM – (12 members)

There are 6 SFOD-A TMs in a company

1 SFOD-B TM is in charge of the company

1 SFOD-C is in charge of a battalion

No abbreviation exists for a SF Group TM (regiment)

***Detachment Numbering***

In reality, only SFOD-A & B’s get named

SFOD-C’s don’t commonly use an abbreviation

Here’s how it works:

  • take the first number only of the SF Group (1/3/5/7/0)
  • take the battalion number as the second number (1-4)
  • take the company letter (A/B/C) and turn it into a number (1-3)
  • take the SFOD-A or B team number (SFOD-A: 1-6 and SFPD-B: 0)

First number – SF Groups are numbered (1/3/5/7/0)

Second number – SFOD-C’s are numbered (1-3)

Third number – SFOD-B’s are numbered 0

Fourth number – SFOD-A’s are numbered 1-6

ODB & ODA’s for Arma 3

ODA’s are 12 man teams that can be split into two 6 man teams

Typical FULL ODA set-up

Arma 3 - Gameplay Guide - SFOD-A/B/C Numbering - ODB & ODA's for Arma 3 - 36A3F86

Typical HALF ODA set-up has 1 OIC (Officer In Charge); 1 of the two Operations SGTs; and 1 member of each of the 4 specialties (weapons; engineers; communications; medical)

MILSIM participants can staff 1/2 ODA TMs because of player number shortages

An ODB can also exist in s smaller version for A3

Reduced ODB example (4 man TM):

  • Commander (MAJ)
  • Operations (SGM)
  • Asst. OPS SGT
  • Communications SGT

Reduced ODA example (6 man TM):

  • Commander (CPT or Warrant Officer)
  • Operations SGT
  • Weapons SGT
  • Engineer SGT
  • Communication SGT
  • Medical SGT

As a MILSIM you can create a Special Forces company (1 ODB and 6 ODAs)

The 6 ODAs can be 1/2 TMs, as can the ODB

You can also create a small combat support (CS) element of 8 Soldiers:

  • CS commander
  • 2 rotary-winged pilots
  • 1 fixed-winged pilot
  • 4 drivers (land & sea)

***With 1 ODB TM (6 man) and 6 ODA TMs (6 man each) 6+26 = 40 SF players total

40 SF players plus 8 CS element = 48 total players plus 2 reserve players***

You can also mimic the geographical alignment of SF Groups with 4 maps

Example:

1st Group (Pacific) – Tanoa

3rd Group (Africa) – Sefrou-Ramal

5th Group (Middle East) – Sefrou-Ramal

7th Group (Latin America) – Tanoa

10th Group (Europe) – Altis/Stratis

Then we take the geographically aligned SF Groups and name the TMs accordingly

1) 1st Group; 1st BTN; Alpha company; ODB; ODA 1-6

2) 3rd Group; 1st BTN; Alpha company; ODB; ODA 1-6

3) 5th Group; 1st BTN; Alpha company; ODB; ODA 1-6

4) 7th Group; 1st BTN; Alpha company; ODB; ODA 1-6

ODA TMs 1-4 mounted/dismounted

ODA TM 5 = HALO

ODA TM 6 = SCUBA

*NOTE – Normally the HALO is TM 4 and the SCUBA is TM 5

1) ODB 1110 and ODA [1111; 1112; 1113; 1114] mounted/dismounted; [1115; 1116] HALO/SCUBA

2) ODB 3110 and ODA [3111; 3112; 3113; 3114] mounted/dismounted; [3115; 3116] HALO/SCUBA

3) ODB 5110 and ODA [5111; 5112; 5113; 5114] mounted/dismounted; [5115; 5116] HALO/SCUBA

4) ODB 7110 and ODA [7111; 7112; 7113; 7114] mounted/dismounted; [7115; 7116] HALO/SCUBA

5) ODB 0110 and ODA [0111; 0112; 0113; 0114] mounted/dismounted; [0115; 0116] HALO/SCUBA

NOTE:

ODB TMs end in a ‘0’; ODA TMs end in 1-6 with 1-4 are mounted/dismounted and 5-6 are HALO/SCUBA

You can staff only 1 SF Group at a time and prepare according to the region:

  • equipment
  • loadout
  • uniform
  • vehicles
