Among Us – The Impostor Guide 2020

What is an Impostor?

An Impostor is a player/s that have been randomly selected to kill all the crewmen (until 1 is left) before all the crewmen finish their tasks. Sounds simple right? Wrong, the impostor also has to avoid being caught along the way.

How you should play!

This part of the guide will show you the game’s mechanics from basic to advance.

Controls

Please toggle (Keyboard + Mouse) ON is settings
Move – WASD / Arrow keys (Obviously)
Interact – Click / Space (Also very obvious)
Escape – Pause (Like every other game)

Gameplay

Now, The map icon located at the top right of the screen is used to toggle the map (More on this magical map later)
To kill someone gets close (Depends on the server’s kill distance) to the victim, and they will highlight/glow red. Once the crewman/victim is highlighted, the use button at the bottom right of the screen will highlight red and say “kill.” The following picture shows you what the victim sees once you have assassinated them.

Once they are dead, you will want to report them straight away and pretend you just found it OR flee the scene for an innocent to uncover. Running away always works better than reporting the body, but it depends on the situation.

Suppose you choose to flee the murder scene; their multiple options. The first way is to just run away a hope nobody spots to on the way. Another way is to climb inside a vent, but be quick because animation takes a second! When you climb inside a vent, you will see arrows around the vent you just climbed in; these arrows point toward other linked vents. As you can guess, you want to click the arrow, and your character will instantly teleport to that vent. Now is the time to climb out BUT WATCH OUT; someone could spot you climbing out as it stops you from moving for a split second. The last way to escape is to sabotage using a magical map. Obviously, you will want to sabotage somewhere on the other side of the map, so everyone rushes there.

The map that the Impostor owns is quite different compared to the usual map. The color is changed, and there is a button on top of the rooms; when a button is clicked, it will activate something in that room.

Technique: If there are 3-4 people left in a match (2-3 crewmen and 1 Impostor), you should use the Impostor’s sabotage map to sabotage the Oxygen room. It forces the people to spit because this task has a timer. Once the crewmen split, follow the crewman that left by themself and kill them. This will instantly force you to win as the other 2 people will not have enough time to reach the other oxygen tank, OR if there is only 1 crewman left, you will win.

The top 3 rooms to sabotage are Lights, Oxygen, and Reactor. The lights room, when activated dramatically, decreases innocent’s area of sight. The Oxygen room forces crewmen to separate apart or go to that location. Lastly, Reactor forces at least 2 people but usually most to go in this room, great for killing someone on the right side of the map right after activating. Note: If you do not go to the room or are late, people will be suspicious.

What do I do if someone sees me murder someone?

If someone sees you kill someone, you have gotten yourself into a little bit of a pickle! The first thing I would do is murder them if possible. If murder is not an option, report the body yourself asap and blame them straight away (Caps lock helps get the point across). If this works and you don’t get voted, and they think it is you, I recommend saying something: “I guess he was innocent but didn’t know what he was doing” or something like that.

How to stop crewmen from running away from you!

To stop crewmen from running away from you to possibly pressing the emergency button, you have to sabotage rooms with a door symbol. These rooms with a door symbol close the doors and block crewmen from entering or leaving for exactly 10 seconds. This is a useful tool for trapping or blocking crewmen.

Stay undercover…

Stay undercover without being caught is easy, but a single mistake and you’re busted. To stay undercover, follow these rules, Never kill when a camera is blinking red, Check nobody is near before you Vent or Kill, Faking jobs, Get notice by crewmen when you are doing good stuff BUT not to the point of stalking.

Who should I kill first?

You will want to kill the smartest crewmen first because they are usually the ones that will catch you. Next, it is smart to kill the crewmen that have proven that they are innocent because nobody will suspect them of killing anyone. Save the noobs for last because they are most likely to leave all their decisions up to chance. Along the way down this hierarchy of targets, your priorities might change. An example will be if someone saw you do something you didn’t want them to see or voting against you during the discussion.

Rule / Keeping the game fun!

1. NEVER Ghost, this means telling your friends who the Impostor is!
2. Never leave the match if you are alive. This makes the match easier to win, less fun, and frowned upon.
3. Don’t call an emergency meeting randomly or at the start of the game when nobody is dead. This wastes people’s time and stops them from doing tasks.
4. Don’t vote, troll. This is an umbrella term but basically means voting for someone for no reason.
5. Don’t blame crewmen if you are not impostor because you will most likely both die.
6. If you die, you still need to do your tasks. If you don’t do your tasks, you are basically blocking your team from having any chances of winning. If you don’t want to do your tasks, leave the match, and it will auto finish them for you.

Important Tips!

This section covers the main tips and critical information.

• Tip 1: Cameras blink red when someone is watching them, so don’t murder near then.
  
• Tip 2: You can stand next to a job and pretend that you are doing it (Most take about 10 seconds). Note: Watch out, fake doing the same job twice, and someone will know it you.
• Tip 3: Killing the person in the cameras room is an easy kill; you can see who is coming, and there is a vent inside the room that leads to the medbay and electrical room
  
• Tip 4: Watch where people go and be the last to leave spawn
• Tip 5: Keep a lookout while leaving a vent
• Tip 6: Agree with the majority and blame people for no reason in chat/discussion time. This is also used to gain trust!
• Tip 7: Upon murdering someone, leave the area and get noticed by someone so they can defend you if someone suspects you. Note: Say they are framing you!
• Tip 8: If there is more than 1 Impostor and you are dead, you can still sabotage rooms to help you, buddy.
• Tip 9: If someone is doing a job, the menu is big and blocks out most of their screen, so they are essentially blinded so you can kill them, kill someone, run, etc. Note: This works best in the security/cameras room because the menu is biggest and more blinding.
• Tip 10: Fake your jobs. Faking a job is an easy way to get someone to think that you are not an Impostor or an excuse as to why you are going to a location, e.g., “Why job was is in LOCATION.”
• Tip 11: Try to avoid being too color cyan (Light blue) because people subconsciously think that color is guilty.
• Tip 12: Assume everyone is suspicious of you, and they are smart…
